History of Tyrone, Pennsylvania

Tyrone was established in 1850. Nestled between the Allegheny and Brush Mountains, it soon established itself as a railroad town.  Almost 100 years later, the railroad still flourished, passing over 50 trains a day the depot on South Pennsylvania Avenue.

However, the depot was demolished in 1968 with the decrease in train business.  Today a new Heritage Railroad Park built in 2000 stands in it's place.
In 1975 the Route 220 By-pass brought the surrounding counties closer, proving Tyrone to be a convenient connection point between Altoona and State College.

Today Tyrone continues to progress as it has become the first rural Pennsylvania community to be added to the Fiber Optic Super Highway.
